Greece announced Tuesday that adults over 60 will be required to receive the COVID injection, and those who don’t comply will face monthly fines.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made the tyrannical announcement during a cabinet meeting in Athens following renewed media hysteria over the so-called “Omicron” variant.
“[The decision] tortured me, but I feel a heavy responsibility in standing next to those most vulnerable, even if it might fleetingly displease them,” Mitsotakis said.
“The new omicron variant is a concern for us and means we must be vigilant,” Mitsotakis said.
“We are focusing our efforts on protection of our fellow citizens, and for this reason, their vaccination will be mandatory from now on,” Mitsotakis told a cabinet meeting.
Greeks who don’t get the shot by Jan. 16 will face a recurring monthly fine of 100 euros, or about 112 USD.
Though about 63% of the country’s 11 million are ‘fully vaccinated’, about 520,000 Greeks over 60 still haven’t taken the injection.
The Greek government has not explained how they will check which adults over 60 have gotten the shot.
“No details were provided on how Greek authorities would be able to establish whether people over 60 have been vaccinated. One possible way could be to cross-check with government social security databases, although this would require notifying the independent data protection agency and potentially passing special legislation to do that,” the AP reported.
